The difference between the original version - the first verse on “Just Another Day in the Projects” from his demo tape - and the one from the final verse on “New York State of Mind” is that on the demo tape he goes on to finish the story about his “gangster” dream saying, “The cops caught the car and sprayed it ’til it was smoked up… That’s when I woke up.”īUT…on the verse that follows he continues, saying, “The whole things was a nightmare/ I fell asleep watching Scarface, laying in a chair.” With my long-term admiration for Nas’ narrative skills and subject-matter in mind, good friend, and one-fourth of PayUp Game, Andre burned a copy of the demo tape for me in fall of ’08.
